Foundations
FOUNDATIONS: Their purpose is to provide the look of better skin, colour and texture. They leave a film on the skin covering minor imperfections and unify colour. Generally made from a water-in-oil formula, the basic is that each drop of water is surrounded with drops of oil. The proportion of each varies to produce different textures and effects, but all give an even tint. They range in colour from flat white to the deepest mahogany. Some can be used without powder.
LIQUIDS—provide a light protective film; can be of the creamy moisturized kind ideal for dry and normal skins, or oil-free formulas for greasy skins. They do not cover well, therefore are not good for camouflaging blemished skin. Sometimes difficult to control, and more efficient when applied with sponge.
Creams
CREAMS--- thicker and heavier with consistency varying from milky to whipped cream. Give the glossiest look, and easy to apply with finger tips or sponge. Usually waterproof.
ALL-IN-ONE BASES--- a mixture of cream and powder, often more difficult to apply as they tend to drag the skin; a damp sponge eases application. Not suggested fro dry skins. Do not require fixing with powder, but finish is drier.
COVER-UPS---very dense creams that feel like putty and often in stick form. Used to cover skin blemishes and alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Pat on with fingertips. All cover –ups require extensive blending afterwards.
SOLID CREAM STICKS--- very thick formula, add the most colour, hide blemishes, dark circles, freckles. Stroke on directly, and then blend with fingers.
GELS AND GLOSSIES—like a more fluid petroleum jelly, but coloured and scented; easy to smooth on with fingertips, provide a transparent shine, good for adding colour and a healthy looking gloss.
CAKES AND BLOCKS--- dense dehydrated formulas, add a lot of colour, good for covering blemishes. They can be drying so are not advisable for dry skins—but a great help to oily ones. Apply with a damp sponge.
POWDERS: Set make-up with a sheen or matt look Translucent powders are usually preferred as they do not affect other make-up colours . Otherwise te colour spectrum is in four groups; the neutrals, the pinks, the goldens, the browns. If you see a colour, the general rule is to choose one shade lighter than the foundation.
LOOSE POWDERS---best for the final finish to make-up; apply with a puff or cotton wool wad.
PRESSED POWDERS—usually in compacts and convenient for touch –ups , but do not apply layer upon layer, it will cake.
Blushers
BLUSHERS; Used to be known as rouge. Now also known as shaders, contourers or , when light as highlighters . Function is to add colour , warmth , shading or luminosity . Rosy, peach and tawny colours tone the cheeks; the deep tawny nd brown shades are used to give the illusion of fading out undesirable features and hollowing cheeks. Apply powders with a brush, other with fingertips.
CREAMS—add moisture as well as colour. Blend in with fingertips; use over foundation but under powder.
Powders
POWDERS---brushed on face after powder; transparent varieties reflect more light and appear to glow.
GELS--- transparent colours for a glossy look, apply over foundation, but don’t cover with powder.
Eye Shadow
EYE—SHADOWS; Add colour and dimension to the eyes, the look of which can be dramatically improved by intelligent shading. Often known as highlighters in the white and creamy tones. Full spectrum of colour.
CREAMS---oil based –soft spreading and easy to blend on skin. Should be set with powder---translucent or talcum---to prevent crease lines. Apply with fingertips or brush.
STICKS---more solid creams with oils dispersed in a waxy base. Like lipsticks, apt to go soggy in hot wheather and hard to spread in cold. Apply stick directly to lids, then blend it with fingertips. Set with powder.

Liquids
LIQUIDS—usually provided with a built-in brush or wand applicator. Contain more water than creams and sticks, long-lasting when dry but difficult to apply as they are inclined to run.
Gels
GELS --- easy to apply but often more gloss than depth of colour, so a couple of coats are required. Apply with fingertips.

POWDERS---based on compressed powder with a moisturizer added to give cling. Staying power is good. Sometimes feel taut on dry skins. Apply with brush or sponge applicator.
Water Colours
WATER-COLOURS---cake-like shadows applied with wet brush. Long lasting and painting-on property facilities artistic effects. Some powders can be used in this way, but once water has been added there’s no returning to using it as simple powder.
Crayons
CRAYONS AND PENCILS--- waxier and softer than for brows, so easy to apply without pulling or dragging over the skin. Colour is drawn on with strokes or curves, blended with fingertips.
